M'mbelwa District council is set to launch an ambitious tree-planting initiative, aiming to plant 4 million tree seedlings this year under the theme,"restore forest and land to secure food production".

The efforts, undertaken in collaboration with the Mzimba Heritage Association (MZIHA), seeks to mitigate the effects of climate change, which has been wreaking havoc on the district's agricultural sector and communities.

Deputy Forest Officer for M'mbelwa District Council, Staples Nyandeni, said the initiative is a crucial step towards reducing the district's carbon footprint and promoting sustainable land management practices.

Nyandeni underscored that as M'mbelwa District council takes this critical step towards a more sustainable future, it serves as a model for other districts and communities across Malawi to follow suit.

"We recognize that charcoal production and careless tree cutting are major contributors to climate change in our district and by planting more trees and promoting sustainable forest management, we can reduce the impact of climate change and create a more resilient environment for our communities,"said Nyandeni.

Secretary General for MZIHA, Kingsley Jere emphasized the importance of collaboration in addressing the challenges posed by climate change.

The tree-planting launch, which will take place at Traditional Authority Mpherembe in Mzimba, on 11 February this year brought together local leaders, community members, and stakeholders from MZIHA.
