President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has assured Malawians that food distribution will not segregate any parts of the country, as one way of ensuring food sufficiency for everyone in the country.

Chakwera made the remarks on Friday at Siyasiya Trading centre in Salima district, adding that maize flour, maize and rice will be distributed fairly to everyone.
"I am aware that in most parts of the country there was drought caused by El Nino, our harvests were not good, and most Malawians are in dire need of food assistance," he said.
He urged Chiefs and everyone involved in identifying households to benefit from the response to exercise fairness so that only eligible households should benefit.
In his remarks, Member of Parliament for Salima Northwest, Enock Phale requested for speedy commencement of food distribution as his area was heavily affected by El Nino and people did not harvest enough.
Senior Chief Khombedza commended the government for the development projects that are taking place in his area.
He cited the rehabilitation of the M5 road, and restructuring of the Salima Sugar Company which has offered employment to more people from his communities.
According to UN World Food Program, around 9 million people, nearly half of Malawi's population, have been affected by hunger due to drought caused by El Nino which affected countries like Zimbabwe, Malawi and Zambia in the Southern Africa.

Up to 4.2 million are currently experiencing 'acute' food insecurity – level 3 on the global standard for measuring food insecurity (the Integrated Food Phase Classification), one stage away from 'emergency.
