NL Promotes Reading Culture in Thyolo

By Dalitso Kampira

The National Library Service (NLS) has encouraged children in Thyolo District to embrace a reading culture to break the barrier of ignorance.

Reading culture has declined- Gada PIC Dalitso Kampira

This was highlighted during the launch of the Children’s Corner at Luchenza Community Day Secondary School (CDSS) last week.

Acting Regional Manager for the Southern Region, Martha Gada, emphasized the significance of the launch, stating that it aims to instill a love for reading and learning among young people, a practice that she noted is currently underdeveloped in Malawi.

"We have launched the Children’s Corner at Luchenza to foster a reading culture, which is currently very low in the country. As the Library Service, we are committed to providing young people with resources like books and reading materials to help develop their reading habits," Gada said.

Assistant District School Health and Nutrition Coordinator for Thyolo, Francis Kunje, commended the National Library Service for the initiative, expressing optimism about its potential impact on knowledge expansion.

"We are grateful that our learners now have a dedicated place to read, which aligns with the Malawi 2063 Vision. Reading has declined recently, but with the establishment of this corner, the situation should improve, benefiting the education sector and helping Malawi thrive," said Kunje.

NLS Luchenza Branch Supervisor, Deborah Nyirenda, reiterated that the launch is aimed at promoting reading among young people in Thyolo.

"This special corner caters to children from nursery to primary school, encouraging them to embrace reading from an early age. This will have a positive impact as it fosters lifelong learning, which is crucial in today’s world," said Nyirenda.

Nyirenda also encouraged parents to support their children’s reading habits by providing access to library resources. "The purpose of libraries goes beyond reading for exams; it’s about embedding a love for reading that continues through life," she said.

One of the parents attending the launch, Mary Zyambo from Chilomo Village, expressed appreciation for the initiative, noting that the Children’s Corner would keep children engaged and reduce idle time spent on non-educational activities.
