Three Malawi Defence Force (MDF) soldiers have been killed in clashes with the M23 rebel group in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

MDF spokesperson, Major Emmanuel Calvin Mlelemba, confirmed the deaths, stating that the soldiers “fell in the line of duty during an encounter with the M23 rebel group operating in Eastern DRC.”

The soldiers were part of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) mission in the DRC, aimed at restoring peace in the conflict-ridden region. Major Mlelemba added that more details would be shared later.

According to inside sources cited by Zodiak Malawi, two soldiers were killed on Thursday in Sake, a town near Goma in North Kivu, while the third soldier died last week.

International media reports indicate that the M23 rebels have intensified their assaults in eastern DRC, seizing more territory this year than ever before.

Malawi’s troops are engaged in a combat peacekeeping mission under the SADC framework, taking significant risks to contribute to regional stability.
