GBV cases continue to rise in Thyolo- Chauluka PIC Dalitso Kampira
For instance, records have shown defilement has registered 13, Rape 7, Illegal divorce 68, Extramarital affairs 17, failing to provide 23 in contrast to previous year which was 12, 7, 30, 19, 17 respectively.
Thyolo Police Station Community Policing Coordinator, Rome Chauluka, told Good Morning Africa News that lack of responsibility and cultural beliefs are contributing factors to the increased cases of Gender Based Violences.
"People in the district are not bearing their responsibility into action. For instance, I do not think you can defile an underaged child, this is why I feel cultural belief is also another contributing factor.
When a girl child has reached a certain age is considered as a grown-up person which put them at high risk of being defiled," he Said.
He however, the police are working hand in with Traditional leaders and communities to curb such malpractices.
Senior Chief Nchiramwera, said he has set committees at community level to fight GBV cases.
"We are working hand in hand with village heads through "Village Committees" by enforcing bylaws as a long-term measure in dealing with the perpetrators. We are also working with police apart from village committees in enforcing the bylaws," said Nchilamwera.
He therefore urged communities to remain committed in curbing different forms of GBV in their respective areas.
