Chitipa Police preaches peace ahead of elections

Police in the northern district of Chitipa have pleaded with politicians and party followers to desist from political violence during campaign period ahead of the September 16th general elections.

The call was made on Saturday after the police conducted solidarity march to denounce political violence ahead of the elections.


The Officer In-charge for Chitipa Police station Morgan Dzonzi told Good Morning Africa News that Police in the district thought to carry out the solidarity march to send a wave of peace and tolerance among politicians to desist from violence during campaign period.


"We thought to carry out this solidarity march to send a message of peace and encourage politicians and party followers to desist from engaging in political violence during campaign ahead of the general elections.


"As police we will take an active role to ensure that peace is maintained during this period," said Dzonzi.


Senior Chief Mwabulambya pleaded with the people to disassociate themselves with political violence saying for decades, Chitipa was known for peace and tolerance.


Shadow councillor Given kitha appreciated the initiative brought by malawi police saying it will help to promote peace and coexistence in the coming general elections


"As a youth and an aspirant, I am very happy with what the police have done in bringing this initiative, spending a strong message to politicians to take an active role to refrain from inviting violence during campaign," said Kitha.


The solidarity march was done in conjunction with National Initiative for Civic Education (NICE).
