Police in Jenda in Mzimba, have arrested Pilirani Gilbert for being found in possession of a dead common duiker, an endangered species in his vehicle while enroute to Lilongwe.

According to Public Relations Officer at Jenda Police Station, MacFarlane Mseteka, confirmed of the arrest at the Jenda roadblock on November 6, 2024, after officers conducted a search in the vehicle.
The PRO said said the Police found the suspect, with the dead duiker, wrapped in a plastic bag in an attempt to conceal it from the authorities.
"It has been established that Gilbert, driving a Toyota Sienta with registration number BZ 18933, struck the common duiker in Chikangawa while traveling to Lilongwe. He then stopped, parked the animal, and intended to take it home for consumption," Mseteka said.
Most endangered species-common duiker
Mseteka said however, when questioned by police, Gilbert was unable to provide any permits or documentation authorizing him to transport or possess the endangered species, leading to his arrest.
"Gilbert has been charged with possession of an endangered species, in violation of the Wildlife Act. He will appear in court once the necessary paperwork is completed," said Mseteka.
Gilbert hails from Nthundu Village, Traditional Authority Kasakula, in Ntchisi District.
