Keep the pods strong-Saukani PIC Victoria Yande
Fisheries Officer for M’mbelwa district council, Andrew Saukani, said most of the times farmers construct weak dikes which easily collapse as a result fish are carried away with flooding water which leads to loss of fish.
Saukani said instead, farmers should ensure that all construction works as regards to the renovation as well as reservation the fishponds must be done and get completed before the onset of the rain.
He said the department of climate change has said that this year, Mzimba is going to have good rains which will be above normal rainfall.
In early December, the department has further predicted normal to above normal rainfall where with a likelihood of floods, wash away as well as stormy which will cause the fishponds.
“Farmers should make proper water channels, plant Vetiva to strengthen the walls of the dykes because lack of proper channels of drainage systems the fish ponds will be flooded," said Saukani.
Saukani further highlighted the relevance of fish farming, saying it is an investment because farmers should be able to produce fish and purchase it at the market.
Saukani therefore, requested fish farmers to adopt modern fish farming technologies in order to boost production.
