Malawi Drought Response project to bail out vulnerable communities in Thyolo

The Malawi Drought Response (MDR) project is geared to bail out 1,920 households affected by El Nino and cyclone Freddy in Thyolo district through cash assistance as well as Agriculture and nutritional support to be implemented by Foundation For Community and Capacity Development (FOCCAD).

In her sentiments on Tuesday after briefing Council Officials Programs Manager for FOCCAD in the District Agness Manda said the project will target those households affected by cyclone Freddy and El Nino.


"The project is in response to the recovery of cyclone Freddy and El Nino hitted households.


"The project will cover Traditional Authority Changata and Kapichi through integrated conditional and unconditional cash assistance, nutrition and agriculture support," she said.


Manda further said the project will support 1,920 vulnerable households going through an emergency phase of acute food and nutrition insecurity occasioned by Freddy and El Nino induced prolonged Drought In the District.


Thyolo District Risk Management Officer, Cosmas Mangoka, said the intervention is timely, saying as government alone cannot manage to reach to everyone in need, hence the need for partners.


He therefore emphasized that the beneficiaries that are benefiting from other initiatives such as Mtukula pakhomo will not be included in this project.


"We will follow guidelines to avoid double dipping," he said.


The MDR project is a consortium whereby 8 partners namely Save the Children, Care Malawi, Self Help Africa and YONECO among others will implement the program in 8 Districts including Thyolo , targeting only T/A Mbawela up to June 2025.
