Mzuzu journalists trained in mental health

Journalists under Nyika Media Club have been trained in mental health and psychosocial first aid training to ensure they carry out effective awareness and deal with the challenges in their day to day lives.

Saint John of God mental health clinician Zondiwe Banda emphasized the crucial role journalists play in raising awareness about mental health challenges in the country.


“We believe that sharing this knowledge with journalists will help societies to have much understanding about mental health problems.


"The training in psychosocial first aid aims at empowering the journalists to support individuals facing mental health challenges", Banda explained.


Banda also urged the public to treat mental health like any other illness, calling for an action to end stigma and discrimination inorder to give greater support to those in need.


In her remarks, Nyika Media Club Executive Member Tionge Hara expressed her gratitude , saying that the training has come at a right time as it has equipped journalists to report on mental health responsibly and avoiding stigma and judgment.


"This meeting has been of great importance because a lot journalist find if hard to report on mental health, but now more stories will be crafted," she said.


The training was organized by Saint John of God Hospitaller Services in Mzuzu city.
