Malawi’s 2024/25 rainy season has started on a bad note wreaking havoc across the country, leaving 10,833 households—equivalent to approximately 48,748 people—grappling with the devastating impacts of storms, heavy rains, strong winds, hailstorms, and lightning.

In a Press release signed by the Commissioner for Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA), Charles Kalemba said the disasters have claimed 11 lives, with eight fatalities caused by lightning strikes and three resulting from collapsing structures.

He said in addition, 79 people have been injured, primarily due to lightning and falling debris.

Kalemba expressed sadness over the loss of lives and the widespread damage caused by the disasters, stating that the department's priority is to provide timely relief to affected households.

“DoDMA has initiated emergency relief operations, distributing essential supplies such as maize, beans, blankets, pails, and plastic sheets for temporary roofing. The department is working closely with local councils and humanitarian partners to ensure that all affected families receive the necessary support.

“Amid the ongoing storms, DoDMA has urged the public to remain vigilant and take precautions to minimize risks. They have advised people to stay informed by checking daily weather forecasts and to postpone outdoor activities during thunderstorms,” said Kalemba.

Kalemba advised the people to always seek shelter in enclosed buildings such as homes or offices during storms and avoiding trees or tall structures that may attract lightning strikes.

He reassured the public of the department's commitment to managing the crisis and providing regular updates on the disaster situation and appealed for cooperation in observing safety measures to prevent further loss of life and injuries.
