The Mozambican government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening bilateral ties with Malawi, with a focus on resolving issues such as the Makanjira border dispute.
We will continue engaging for a solution- Zikhale
Mozambican High Commissioner to Malawi, Alexandre Herculano Manjate, made the remarks on Friday during a courtesy call to Malawi’s Minister of Homeland Security, Kenneth Zikhale Ng'oma, at Capital Hill in Lilongwe.
Manjate emphasized the importance of the bilateral relationship for the development of both nations, noting that Malawi and Mozambique share common borders that require cooperation to ensure security and peaceful co-existence.
“The two nations are engaged in high-level discussions on matters like prisoner exchange and border issues. We're working on strategies that would allow offenders of minor crimes to serve sentences in their respective countries.
“We’re also consulting traditional leaders from both sides to find the best solution for the Makanjira border dispute,” said Manjate.
Homeland Security Minister highlighted the long-standing cooperation between the two countries, describing it as beneficial for both.
He assured that he would continue engaging with Mozambican officials to find a lasting solution to the border tensions in Makanjira, Mangochi District.
Ng'oma also addressed concerns over the mistreatment of Malawian truck drivers in Mozambique.
"Our drivers are facing harsh treatment in Mozambique, and we are working to address this issue through our bilateral ties," he said.
The relationship between Malawi and Mozambique focuses on key areas such as trade, security, and development, all aimed at improving the lives of people in both countries.
