Minister of Homeland Security Ken Zikhale Ng’oma made the announcement during his visit to the Central West Region Police Headquarters in Lilongwe on Friday.
He encouraged officers to continue serving the public with professionalism as the country gears up for the elections.
Ng'oma acknowledged that while the government is working to boost police numbers, the current figure still falls short of international standards, necessitating further recruitment.
"We plan to recruit 3,000 police officers ahead of the 2025 elections. This is crucial to ensure the elections are free and fair," said Ng’oma.
He also noted that crime rates have significantly decreased, reflecting the improved performance of the Malawi Police Service.
The minister also highlighted the government's efforts to enhance officers' welfare, including the ongoing construction of houses for police personnel nationwide.
"Police performance has improved, with a noticeable reduction in road accidents and criminal cases. We aim to recruit more officers to maintain this momentum and ensure the upcoming elections are secure," Ng’oma added.
Commissioner of Police for the Central West Region, Emmanuel Soko, praised the minister’s visit, describing it as a testament to the government's commitment to improving police welfare.
Encouraged to be professional
He assured that officers would continue to perform their duties with professionalism.
