The Malawi Police at Jenda trading centre, in Mzimba district, have arrested Robert Boma, 34, for illegal possession of Indian Hemp weighing 32 kilograms.

It is reported that Boma was attempting to board a bus to the Malawi’s Capital City Lilongwe when authorities discovered he was carrying 32 kilograms of the drug.

Jenda Police spokesperson Sub Inspector MacFarlane Mseteka confirmed of Boma’s arrest saying well-wishers sent a tip-off indicating that the suspect had come from Luwawa Forest with a sack of Indian hemp.

"Upon his arrival at Jenda Trading centre, he was repackaging the drugs at Section 8B to disguise them for transportation. When police detectives acted on the tip, Boma tried to flee towards the bus depot but was intercepted.

“A search in his bag confirmed the presence of Indian hemp. When asked, Boma could not produce any permits for possessing the cannabis, leading to his immediate arrest,” said Mseteka.

Boma faces charges for possessing Indian hemp without a license and will appear in court soon.

The suspect is originally from Chiphazi village, Traditional Authority Kasumbu in Dedza district.
