Mother arrested for attempting to hang own son in Mzimba

Police in Mzimba district have arrested a mother identified as, Veta Mwale for attempting to kill her One- year -six- months-old son in the district.

Mzimba Police Spokesperson Maria Banda said Mwale was arrested by members of the community in the morning hours of October 22,2024 after she tried to hang her own son with a rope due to her problems in failing to provide for the son and herself.

Banda said people from the surrounding area intervened and sought help from members of community policing after being informed of the impending ordeal.

Banda further said after investigations, it was learnt that Veta Mwale had travelled all the way from Lilongwe to Mzimba to stay with her daughter who she believed that would be the pillar of support for her basic needs.

"The motive behind the attempted killing of the son is believed to be related to Veta Mwale's struggling to find basic needs like food and shelter. She is expected to appear in court soon", said Banda.

Mwale comes from Jailosi Mwale, Traditional authority Mzikubola in Mzimba District.
