Mzimba CSOs commend land tenure rights project

Civil Society Organizations network in Mzimba have commended Mzimba Youths Organization (MYO) for the strides to promote land tenure rights especially to women in the district.

The CSOs Chairperson Christopher Melele made the remarks on the sidelines of a tour to some of the activities under the enhancing food security through strengthening land tenure rights for women implemented by MYO in the area of Inkosi Khosolo in the district.


Melele underscored the importance of land ownership to women and girls saying it is a key driver for the development of the district.


Melele further stressed the need for people in the district including women and girls to register their land to M'mbelwa district council for ownership.


Member for Mzimba Heritage Association (MZIHA) Chidembo Moyo said women and girls already have right to land in the district but the issue of land registration the government should use another approach so that they should not be conflict between land ownership and culture.


"Culture is dynamic, there are certain cultural practices that have changed in Mzimba due to the right approach the advocates use to approach the chiefs," said Chidembo.


One of the victims who have had her land grabbed before, Bijita Shunga from Makhangala village, Traditional Authority Khosolo urged the communities to use the Traditional chiefs and organisations to assist the victims to solve their problems of land grabbing.


"I was once a victim of land grabbing by my relatives due to land conflict but with the assistance of Mzimba youth Organisation and the chiefs the land has been given back,” said Shunga.


Meanwhile the Executive Director for Mzimba Youth Organization has vowed to continue empowering women and girls through land tenure rights across the district.


So far, the program is being implemented in the area of TA Khosolo, M'mbelwa and Mzikubola
