The campaign which is a follow up of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between the council and MACOKASA, aimed at harmonizing road safety rules and regulations for the motorcycle operators.
One of the Kabaza operators in the city, Symapo Champhira, hailed the campaign saying it s a significant move towards reducing road accidents caused by lack of road safety awareness.
" Many accidents occur due to lack of road safety awareness, now we are aware of how we can best operate our business to minimize roads accidents,” he said.
MACOKASA Chairperson, Moses Mwalabu said the campaign was organized to prevent road accidents which he said are caused by motorcyclists’ lack of knowledge on road safety rules.
"We are trying to reduce road accidents that are caused by road users including kabaza operators by sensitizing them on the road safety. All Kabaza operators are advised to park their motorcycle into designated ranks to prevent flooding of motorcycle all over the city,” he said.
Mzuzu City Council Public Relations Officer, Macdonald Gondwe expressed a concern over the unregulated mushrooming of Kabaza operators in the city, leading to numerous accidents.
"We signed MOU with MACOKASA to harmonize motorcycle operators and we materialize this by sensitizing them on how best they can use the road for the safety of themselves and other road users,” said Gondwe.
Gondwe revealed that aside from the awareness campaign, the city plans to document and license all Kabaza operators to always ensure safety.
