Preliminary results of National Advocacy on Access to Medicines reveal critical challenges in Malawi

The Preliminary findings from the National Advocacy on Access to Medicines in Malawi has highlighted on the critical challenges in accessing HIV, TB, and HCV treatments in the country.

Chief Medical Officer for HIV, STI, and Viral Hepatitis in the Ministry of Health Dr. Rabson Kachala, expressed optimism about the study's impact. "These results will greatly benefit Malawi," he stated.


Chairperson of the Civil Society Advocacy Forum,Gift Trapence, emphasized the need for sector-specific solutions. "We're examining access across HIV, TB, and other areas," he explained.


Trapence also cited high costs, supply chain disruptions, and funding shortages as significant obstacles to accessing essential medicines.


On his part, Executive Director for Community Health Rights Advocacy (CHeRA) Aniz Mitha stressed the importance of affordability and availability.


"Our project aims to break down barriers to essential medicines.",He said


The market intelligence study assesses intellectual property barriers in Malawi's health sector.


Funded by KELIN through the Solidarity Project, the research is being conducted by ITPC and CHeRA.


The study's findings will inform policy changes and improve access to life-saving treatments. Its impact will be felt across various sectors, including HIV, TB, and HCV.
