This was said on the sidelines of road Accidents Awareness Month held last week at Jenda Community Day Secondary School in Mzimba District.

This event was part of a global initiative aimed at raising awareness about the challenges faced by individuals with spinal cord injuries due to road accidents.

SIAM's Executive Director, Bylon Kondowe, highlighted the urgent need to address road traffic accidents, a leading cause of spinal injuries that impact many productive individuals.

Kondowe emphasized that many accidents are preventable, often due to motorcyclists, pedestrians, and drivers not adhering to traffic rules.

He raised concerns about unroadworthy vehicles and motorcycle taxis, which contribute to severe injuries and fatalities.

"The event was by Funded by the Abilis Foundation, aimed to educate the community on road safety and spinal cord injury prevention," said Kondowe

Kondowe therefore urged police to take proactive measures in traffic management to enhance safety for all road users and reduce accidents.

Speaking earlier at the function, Jenda Police spokesperson MacFarlane Mseteka, also spokesperson for Jenda Police Station, reaffirmed the police's vital role in mitigating road accidents.

“We will continue to share our success stories by collaborating closely with the media, recognizing the importance of effective communication in safety efforts.

“Let’s all do our part and remind drivers of their responsibilities on our roads. Most accidents in Malawi are preventable if we adhere to the laws and work together,” he said.

He called on the community to partner with law enforcement in reducing road accidents, asserting that safety is a collective responsibility.

The day began with a solidarity march from Jenda Roadblock, symbolizing unity and support to those affected.

Jenda was chosen for its proximity to the M1 road, which has seen a significant increase in traffic accidents.
