Police at Jenda in Mzimba district, have arrested three men—John Phiri, 26, Richard Phiri, 25, and Jailos Phiri, 28—on suspicion that they assaulted a 40-year-old man, Augustin Mafuleka, who died on August 24, 2024, while receiving treatment at Mzuzu Central Hospital.

Police spokesperson at Jenda Police Station, Sub Inspector Macfarlen Mseteka confirmed of the incident, saying following an intelligence-driven operation on the night of September 9, 2024, detectives successfully apprehended the suspects from their hiding place.
Mseteka said that the investigation revealed that on August 8, 2024, the suspects and Mafuleka were involved in a dispute over beer at a drinking joint in Luwerezi, but the quarrel later escalated, and the suspects severely assaulted Mafuleka.
"The deceased was initially treated at Jenda Rural Hospital but was later referred to Mzuzu Central Hospital due to his worsening condition. He died on August 24, 2024, while receiving medical care." said Mseteka.
He also the suspects have therefore been charged with murder under section 209 of the Penal Code and will appear in court soon.
Mafuleka hailed from Kampheta Mafuleka village in Traditional Authority Mabulabo, Mzimba district.
