Executive Director for YAS Charles Kajoloweka made the remarks at Golden Peacock in Lilongwe on Tuesday during a training with community journalists drawn from across the country, under Democracy in Young Hands and Youth in Elections project.
He said journalists needs to tackle political issues responsibly and write stories that encourages participation of youth in the forthcoming general elections.
“As YAS, we thought to engage and train community journalists to be well informed about inclusive governance so that they reach out to the communities with true information and avoid misinformation and disinformation.
“In 2019 the representation of youths in parliament was at 4 %, Youth and Society is working hard to increase the chances of the youths to be elected as Councillors and Members of Parliament,” said Kajoloweka.
He said Media plays a big role in reaching out to the masses in the community and hence the training was meant to strengthen the capacity of community journalists to encourage them to be champions of inclusive democracy.
However, the Executive Director for Media Council of Malawi (MCM) Moses Kaufa challenged the journalists to write correct news about elections so that the elections should be free from any violence.
One of the journalists who attended the meeting, Thoko Kandulu, commended the organization for the training saying he has learnt how to report on issues of elections.
