Government launches Policy, Community Development Month initiative

Minister of Gender, Community Development and Social Welfare Jean Sendeza has stressed the need for communities in the country to play a pivotal role and engage in development initiatives using resources that they have in their respective areas.

The Minister made the call on Thursday during the launch of the National Development Policy and Community Development Month Initiative at Rukuru Primary School under Traditional Authority Khosolo in Mzimba District.


Sendeza underscored the importance of communities to be self-reliant in conducting development activities saying it is a key driver for the development of the district.


She therefore commended communities in the area for its efforts in strengthening self development activities.


“In the past we used to have the youth week where the communities could construct bridges, schools, roads and among others that could be the useful in the community and we want to bring back that spirit of developing the country,” said Sendeza.


M’mbelwa District Council Chairperson Morgan Tembo said the council will continue to sensitize the communities on the importance of the programs and provide financial support to the communities.


Inkosi Khosolo commended the initiative saying the people in his area have embraced self-reliant initiatives that they have managed to construct teacher’s house, roads just to mention a few as one way of improving their livelihoods.


” The communities have managed construct teachers house, toilets at Rukuru primary school as well as construction of an earth road to ease mobility challenges we face to ferry the sick as well as transporting agricultural produce,” said Khosolo.


The initiative will run from 2024-2029 under the theme inclusive self-help community development: A catalyst for self-reliance and sustainable socio-economic development.
